The Original Globe Theatre
The original Globe Theatre was built in 1597 - 1598. The theatre officaily opened in 1599. Built by Shakespeare's "playing company" the Lord Chamberlain's Men. There were 6 men who owned the Globe Theatre, the Burbage brothers each owned 25% each Heminges, Phillips, Pope, and Shakespeare to 12.5%.The Globe Theatre was built out of timber that had been used in a previous theater, The Theatre, built by the Burbage's father. It was built in Southwark, London, England on the sight of where Anchor Terrace sits today. The theatres exact dimentions are unknown, the shape and size have been aproximated for the past two centuries; they think they now have a close mesurement. Globe Theatre is said to of had approximately 100 ft. in diameter, been 3 stories high, and the ability to hold up to 3,000 people between seating and standing. With the ability to hold such a big audience the stage had to be rather big, 43 ft. wide a depth of 27 ft. and was raised 5 feet from the ground (all measurements aproximated). Since the Globe Theatre was half inside half outside. It is said that the stage had a trap door that led to a room called "cellarage" and a room above the stage called the " heavens". This theatre served usefull for almost 15 years, until it burnt down in 1613.
The Second Globe Theatre
On June 29, 1613 the theatre is brought down, during a showing of Shakespeare's play Henry VIII, one of the theatrical cannons missfired and ingites the thatch and wooden beams that hold the Globe Theatre together. The second Globe Theatre is built and opened in 1614, in the exact spot of the old one and with the same structure. Only this time the ceiling is tiled. The Globe remains in use until it is closed by the Puritans in 1642. In 1644 the second Globe Theatre is torn down. All the theatres that had existed at the time were closed down and demolished due to making room for tenemants.
Shakespeare's Globe
Shakespeare's Globe is the third version of the original Globe Theatre. Located in Bankside, London, England about 750 ft. away from the original site. Since the Anchor Terrace is built on the land,67 - 70 where the majority of the foundation lies, no further excavations have been permitted. A man by the name of Sam Wanamaker is the founder of Shakespeare's Globe opened in 1997. He tryed to get the Globe to be as close as possible to the first Globe and it is the only structure in London that is allowed to have a thatch roof. In this theatre the same schedule applies, there are no spotlights so all shows are performed during the day or early evening, no microphones are used, and all music is played live. The idea of creating a new globe theatre wasn't just in London, England replicas have been built all around the world. Shakespeare's Globe is open year round but only is only performed in during the spring and summer months. Tours are open year round.
